Vancouver’s Chinatown-One of the best in the world

For the month of May my focus is on Vancouver’s Chinatown. While a few of the businesses seem to be closing, Vancouver’s Chinatown offer a trip back to another time and place with its buildings, food and atmosphere. Here are some more pictures

The pictures are of Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese garden located @ 578 Carrall St. It has two parts a public park and a museum garden. The public park is free. The museum garden is $14 per person and comes with a guided tour of Chinese garden. Read more about the Dr Sun Yat-Sen and the creation of the Chinese Republic and the concept of the Chinese garden following the philosophical branch of Taoism commonly known as “yin and yang”

Just at the end of Chinatown between Main and Union is the remnants of a prosperous black community known as Hogan Alley that existed between early 1900’s to 1960’s. Jimi Hendrix( the great guitarist) lived a portion of his life in Hogan Alley

Why women compete for men?

I heard the story of the woman that killed the mistress of her husband in a small Pennsylvania town. The question becomes why would anyone risk their future and end the life of another woman over a man who probably didn’t care about neither one of these women? Now lets talk about why women compete over men

a) Resources- It is somewhat admirable to see men go to war for resources. You see men on battlefields fighting each other for territory and resources. So for woman, the man they are fighting for is a symbol of that resource. So in many ways when women fight another women they are fighting over perceived resources they want to attain or keep

b) ego- Who doesn’t have an ego? It is a blow to the self-esteem to be betrayed by someone who you are married to. Often we may place that anger from someone that betrayed us, and turn the anger towards the “other woman”

c) Keeping secrets- You want to portray a certain image to ourselves, family, friends and strangers about your life. If someone disrupts that perfect image, it causes anger and resentment towards that individual

d) Low Self Esteem- If you do not think you deserve a better man. You willing to settle for anyone and anything

So what can a woman do to avoid competing with other women over men?

  1. Make yourself the one people compete over. Let go of men that treat you and other women with disdain
  2. Level up- Increase your desirability and invest in yourself that you are not limiting yourself to one man even when you are married. Think with the mentality “hope for the best, prepare for the worst
  3. Let go of the perfect image syndrome. It is okay not to have a perfect life and it is okay to have friends and family see you at the best as well as your worst times. Don’t hold on to bad situations to put on an image

A couple must have at least 8 bank accounts in reaching their financial goals

I recommend for a couple to have at least 8 bank accounts in order to execute a balanced financial plan that allows the couple to enjoy, save, pay for life expenses and pay down debt. They are two schools when it comes to paying down debt

a) the thrifty method-basically live a low budget life and cut out all wants, in order to pay off all debt (including mortgage debt) in an accelerated pace

b)balanced method- pay debt off at a slower pace that would enable you to still fulfill your wants as well as continue to pay down your debt

We have chosen option b. We are paying our debts off slowly while satisfying our wants and needs. We pay a little over the minimum plus contribute extra to the debt when we make more than what we expected in our pay checks

So we do have 8 bank accounts and this how it is divided

  • Two personal (individual) bank accounts for personal needs a) one for me and b) one for my husband
  • Joint bank account for our family bills such as rent, food expenses and utilities
  • Savings account for long term purchases such as a car or a house
  • Savings for clothing allowance and personal care
  • Savings account for debt repayment (every July, November and March) we take money from this account to make lump sum payment
  • Savings account for vacation and special outing
  • Savings for Emergency saving

New Area-Vancouver’s Chinatown from Pender St to Main St

I am personally excited about exploring Chinatown this month of May in celebration of Asian Heritage Month. This is such a historical and cultured area of Vancouver. One of the world’s largest Chinatown, the area of Pender St, Keefer St and Main St has been home to Vancouver Chinese community since the late 1880’s to now. Although the Chinese community has in many ways outgrown this area, and now the Chinese Community has expanded to various other places in British Columbia, this is a good opportunity to explore the beginnings of Chinese Community in British Columbia. We will be looking at the buildings, food, and the many stores.

Jack Chow Insurance- this building and company is part of fabric of Chinatown. Fun fact: Jack Chow Insurance is where I got my marriage certificate

Showcasing two things that are instrumental to this area and Chinese culture. Entertainment and Herbal Stores. Good Luck Entertainment Centre is located @ 125 Pender St East. Cheung Sing Herbal and Birds is located @ 536 Main St

Who introduced Megan Markle to Prince Harry?

When I was 11 years old, I was enrolled in a summer camp program. There were four boys and three girls in this program. Automatically the boys and girls segregated themselves by their gender. I was the only African-Canadian person in the program. Among the three girls, one was tall blonde with blue eyes, the other was shorter with brown hair and blue eyes and then there was me, with short black hair and brown eyes. At the very start of the program, the girl with the brown and blue eyes started to distance herself from us two girls and started hanging around with the boys. To be honest she was a little of a tomboy and she felt more comfortable engaging with the boys. So for the next week after week it was just us two girls forming a friendship and hanging out together. Towards the end of the program the teacher said we were doing a project and for us to pair up, and the one person that was left without a partner would be paired up with teacher. I automatically assumed that I and the girl with blonde and blue eyes were going to be partners. We had hanged out all summer together while the other girl had chosen to ignore us and hang out with the boys. However to my surprise the blonde girl asked the brown haired girl to be her partner and I was left without a partner. I went home that day and asked myself what had happened? What was wrong with me? She hadn’t shown signs that she was dissatisfied with our friendship? It took me a university degree and life experience to figure out what this 11 year old girl knew at such a young age. In order to have the best access to resources one must promote their self image and images that are most similar to them.

After many similar experiences with white girls and women growing up, I began to perceive that culturally white women were raised to value and promote their image above all other images. In contrast, if I were put in the same situation where I had to choose between another black girl who was unfriendly to me as opposed to a white girl who was friendly to me, my choice irregardless of whose looks were closer to mine will be the girl who was most friendly. What does this summer camp experience have to do with Megan Markle? Basically I was surprised when I found out that it was a white woman that was responsible for introducing Megan Markle to Prince Harry. I wondered if that meant a shift in the culturally mindset. By linking Megan Markle image to one of the most eligible bachelors, that creates a self promotion for a woman that is non-white. In contrast, there is shift happening in African American culture that is encouraging black women to become more self promoting, and encouraging black to support and promote their images first and foremost.

However one may argue that Megan Markle who is bi-racial, looks closer to her “white side,” so it is not a stretch for her image to promoted in the “white media.” Although this can be true, the fact Megan Markle has been revealed as having a black parent, psychologically transfers her into a “black woman” to the wider white population. This phenomenon can be seen by the types of insults thrown at Megan Markle. She is being told to go back “Africa”. Certain members of the royal family are showing up at parties wearing stereotypical images as an insult to Megan Markle’s blackness. It seems her looks are almost put aside and the fact that she is part black becomes her whole image. So this leads me back to my earlier question, if Megan Markle image becomes featured and promoted, what does this do for the perception of the standard of beauty? Are we seeing a pendulum swing whereby white women are becoming less promoted and non-white women(particularly black women) are becoming more promoted? Will the relationship between Megan Markle and Harry change how will perceive beauty and love? This are interesting times and It will be interesting to see how the “Megan Effect” will alter society perception of the standard of beauty. Only time will tell.

Seven steps to take to get a quality and resourced man and avoid ending up with a loser

  1. Invest in yourself. Practice self care. Learn how to take care of yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. Love yourself first before you can spread your love to others.
  2. Read and Travel. Reading and travelling exposes you to different ideas and thinking. It enables you to gain a new perspective that will make you more engaging to quality men
  3. Date with a strategy. If you are 18-25, date multiple men. Date to figure out what you find attractive in a man. Expose yourself to a variety of men, different classes, races, and cultures. If you are over 25 years old give yourself at least 2 years to date multiple men. Dating multiple men allows competition between different men and allows the best men to rise to the top. Do not trap yourself in long term relationships which do not benefit you. Do not attach yourself to men that have not yet reached their physical, mental and financial maturity
  4. Date with a purpose after you have figured out what you find attractive in a man by a) going to places that you find quality men e.g., charity events, spending time in quality neighborhoods
  5. Be Patient. Don’t let others push you or don’t push yourself to settle for anyone. It is okay to be single, and be by yourself till you find the man that meets your expectations
  6. Know yourself. Make a mental list of what you want in a man. Make sure the list has characteristics that you will not compromise on. Stick to that list because that will be your objective guide
  7. Emphasize your best qualities. We are not perfect, however everyone has that special physical and mental characteristics that other people compliment you about. For example I consider myself average in looks, however I have a killer dimple and beautiful smile. I take full advantage of this, and in my life have attracted quality men that have commented on my smile and dimple

Living in an expensive city and buying fashionable fashion

I set out to achieve two short goals by April and May 2019. The goals were to set up a blog and finish my summer shopping. The budget I allocated to the blog was $120 and for the summer clothing shopping was $150. I like to announce that I have achieved those goals.

For the blog, I set up a blog site with wordpress for $120. I am not computer savvy so I found that wordpress offered me the best option. For $120 per year I would have access to free hosting and a domain. WordPress also makes blogs easily accessible and easily able to navigate and create.

For the summer clothes shopping, I went over budget to add more pieces to my summer wardrobe. I spent $180 dollars. Here is the pictures of the clothes and where I got the clothes.

The jeans and the summer jacket were bought @ thrift store called “Still Fabulous” @1124 Commercial Drive. The summer jacket cost $13 and the jeans costs $10

The summer bag is a Kate Spade. I got this bag @ the Kate Spade outlet in Richmond @ McArthurGlen Designer Outlet for $45 and the two sunglasses @ The Bay for a total of $15 on clearance.

The first picture is a skirt and a summer blouse. The pink skirt was bought @ the thrift store “The fabulous” for $15. The blouse was purchased @ The Bay for $30. The second picture is dress for the summer parties and outings, the cost was $52 @ the Ralph Lauren outlet store @ McArthurGlen Designer.
